FIFA Worldcup 2022: Argentina’s central bank may print Messi on currency notes

  • Argentina’s Central Bank discussed possibility of including Messi on $1,000 bill.
  • Bank reportedly convened to celebrate La Albiceleste’s historic World Cup victory.
  • In honour of Lionel, note will also have inscription “La Scaloneta” on back.

Since Argentina’s victory in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Lionel Messi has received a lot of attention. The renowned Maracana Stadium in Brazil prompted him to make his mark on the Hall of Fame, and his contract with Paris Saint-Germain was extended. On Wednesday, the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina discussed the possibility of including Messi on the $1,000 bill.

The regulator bank for Argentina reportedly convened to celebrate La Albiceleste’s historic World Cup victory, according to the financial journal El Financiero.

In the Qatar World Cup final, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after the score remained tied 3-3 after extra time.

Despite the newspaper’s claim that the bank “jokingly suggested” the idea, officials did discuss it before to the World Cup final.

The most enthusiastic directors, including Lisandro Cleri, a devoted supporter of Boca Juniors, and Eduardo Hecker, a supporter of Independiente, agreed that a banknote with this design would awaken the collecting spirit of Argentines, according to El Financiero. “Before you think otherwise, this option was ‘jokingly’ proposed by members of the Argentine Central Bank,” the newspaper said.

Prior to this, the bank produced commemorative coins to mark the 50th remembrance of Eva Peron, the wife of former President Juan Domingo Peron, and Argentina’s 1978 World Cup win.

The article states that in honour of coach Lionel Scaloni, the currency note will also have the inscription “La Scaloneta” on the back.

What about the back of the ticket?

After winning the 2021 Copa América, the Finalissima (the game against Italy, the most recent Euro champion), and Qatar 2022, they believe “La Scaloneta” (the team managed by Leonel Scaloni) has already accomplished enough to be immortalised there, the newspaper reported.
