Hospital evacuated after man with WWI shell stuck in rectum. On Saturday, an 88-year-old Frenchman provoked an emergency response when he arrived at a hospital with a World War I artillery ball trapped in his rectum.
Hospital Sainte Musse, in Toulon, southern France, was evacuated when the nameless patient arrived in hopes that someone would remove the WWI explosive stuck in the anus and unwittingly set off a “bomb scare”.
“An emergency occurred from 9 pm to 11.30 pm on Saturday that required the intervention of bomb disposal personnel, the evacuation of adult and paediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies,” stated a spokeswoman for Hospital Saint Musse.
“We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework,” they explained, adding that the administration had taken all necessary safeguards.
The bomb squad disposal experts rushed into action, determining that the First World War shell was unlikely to explode within the man’s body, who is thought to have inserted it into his rectum for sexual pleasure.

After calming down, doctors created an incision and medically removed the 20-cm-long and 2-inch-wide shell from the patient’s behind, according to the French publication Var-Matin.

According to the hospital’s representative, the elderly patient is currently in “excellent health” and is recovering nicely.
Even though it was unusual, it was not the first time surgeons extracted war mementoes from a patient’s rectum.
Last year, a collector in the Gloucester area of the United Kingdom (UK) got a World War II (WWII) artillery shell caught in his rectum after “slipped and fell” on it while cleaning up.
