K-pop star Jin from BTS uploaded a photo of himself with his new military haircut. “It appears cuter than I anticipated,” he stated.

Due to the fact that South Korea is technically still at war with its hostile neighbour, North Korea, all able-bodied men are obligated to serve in the military.

Jin has begun a five-week boot camp training near the North Korean border.

According to reports, he will thereafter be sent to a frontline unit. This announcement caused a frenzy among his millions of loving supporters.

So, what should Jin anticipate during his time on the frontlines?

At the boot camp in Yeoncheon where Jin has enrolled, recruits sleep on the floor on mats in dorms with 30 other people. Before being subjected to challenging wartime scenarios, they are trained how to handle weapons and discharge live ammo.

Cadets told us that being locked in a gas chamber to feel the effects of CS gas and having to launch a live grenade were the most difficult tasks they faced.

Yang Su-yeon, a 22-year-old who completed his training at Yeoncheon last year, remarked, “I was apprehensive to grasp the grenade and was astounded by its force.”

“Physically tough, but mentally manageable. “All of the drill sergeants were friendly,” stated Yang.

Jin will reportedly be stationed near the North Korean border with a frontline unit following his training.

The Demilitarized Zone is a 4-kilometer-wide (2.5-mile-wide) strip of land that extends down the length of North and South Korea’s border (DMZ). Both sides are well armed and separated by barbed wire fences.

Yang served with the 5th Infantry Division as an outpost guard near the DMZ, which is one of the most frontline locations. Utilizing thermal imaging technology, he would stand watch throughout the night, continuously observing the North Korean soldiers on the other side.

“On occasion, I witnessed North Korean soldiers being kicked or slapped in the face,” he claimed.

They had to perform physical labour since they lacked the sophisticated tools we possessed.

Observing the North Korean soldiers made Yang appreciative for his own experience, he added. “When I saw what they had to do, I realised, ‘Wow, I’m so much more comfortable.'”

However, BTS’s Jin will have to face the approaching winter. Yang recounted days of shovelling snow during sub-zero temperatures.

When we went outside, he added, our eyelashes would freeze.

Yang lauded the ethos of his squad, saying, “Because we carried loaded weapons, we had to maintain our composure, thus there was no harassment or beatings.”

Yang volunteered to serve as a frontline guard due to the position’s privileges, which include extra time off base.

Jin will likely be assigned to a facility located further from the DMZ, similar to Heo Sungyoung, who served with the 6th Corps Command Centre from 2018 to 2020.

During the first six months, he guarded the command center’s entrance.

“It was so tedious and lengthy. “All I could do was stare at the sky,” Heo remarked. He was then transferred to the logistics team, where he was in charge of ordering supplies such as Kleenex and socks.

The mandatory military duty in South Korea is a cause of frustration for many young men, who resent being taken away from their studies, jobs, and friends.

It was rumoured for months that the government may exempt the members of BTS from military duty on the grounds that they had already served their nation by earning billions of dollars for it, and it would be more advantageous to enable them to continue doing so.

The members of BTS declared their intention to join in October, with Jin, the eldest, going first.

Still, the rumours that he would be deployed to the front line stunned several fans, who believed he would be given a less perilous job.

There used to be a special unit for celebrities, where they were allowed to continue working as performers and were granted unique privileges. Some soldiers were found to be abusing the system by leaving their barracks more frequently than allowed. The two-tier system was eliminated in 2013.

“I would be lying if I claimed it didn’t feel like a waste of time,” Yang, who was stationed at the guard post, said. “If given the opportunity again, I would not do it. In 18 months, I could have learned so much more in the actual world.

“I would advise Jin to simply bide his time and pray that it goes fast.”

However, Heo from the logistics team had more vivid memories. Initially, he stated that, like many guys in their twenties, he questioned why he needed to be there, but he ultimately learned crucial things.

“At school, I primarily interacted with others from the same background, but in the military, everyone was so diverse. I realised how much more expansive and varied the world was.”

He advises Jin to take pleasure in this experience. “As a major celebrity, he probably hasn’t had many opportunities to meet regular people. I believe this will be beneficial to him.”

Tens of thousands of followers have already reached out to Jin online to provide their own advise and express how much they will miss him.
