Authorities say a Florida man hurled two kittens from a moving car last month.
Diego Torres Ruiz, 29, faces animal cruelty charges.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office: Ruiz threw the kittens out of his vehicle on U.S. 1 on Nov. 28.
A driver observed the cats fall from a southbound Hyundai Santa Fe around mile marker 87, the sheriff’s office reported. Sheriff’s office: a witness reported other automobiles swerved to avoid striking the animals.
The sheriff’s office claimed Ruiz was freed when officers couldn’t locate the kittens and he denied knowing about them.
Later that day, a cat was discovered dead, allegedly after been hit by a car.
A Rain Barrel Village employee spotted the second cat in the woods and transported it to Whiskers & Paws in Key Largo for non-life-threatening injuries. According to its website, the organisation saves wild cats in the upper Florida Keys.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported the surviving cat was adopted by a witness who said the kittens resembled those thrown from the driving truck.
Witness reportedly identified Ruiz’s car as the suspect vehicle, sheriff’s office claimed.
Ruiz’s arraignment is January 3. Ruiz’s legal counsel is unknown.
