Morocco overcame Portugal 1-0 to get to the World Cup semi-finals.

In the Arab world, Saturday’s success was especially sweet because Morocco is the first Arab or African country to reach the World Cup’s last four in 92 years.

Casablanca, a western Moroccan port city, saw scenes of ecstasy as residents celebrated their country’s win.

“Electric!” Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reported from Casablanca that people are dancing and celebrating.

Thousands of Morocco fans have traveled to Qatar to cheer on the Atlas Lions, but others have traveled in reverse to experience the country’s effervescent atmosphere.

Two Saudi families and one from Qatar flew to Morocco to celebrate with Moroccans, Haque said.
More people will want to see history made.

Adnane Bennis, managing director of Morocco World News, said there are “no words” to describe Morocco’s success over Portugal for the country, Africa, and the Arab region.

“We’re thrilled,” Bennis told Al Jazeera from Rabat, Morocco, he couldn’t believe they made the semis.

Moroccans in the nation and abroad will celebrate till daybreak, he said.

“This is a historic win for Morocco, and it wasn’t random. We trusted ourselves and our team… We’re two victories away from winning the World Cup, and the dream is still alive.

The region rejoiced.

In Gaza’s largest sports center, hundreds cheered on Morocco.

Al Jazeera’s Youmna ElSayed stated the vote was a success for “all Arab nations.”

“They yelled, clapped, drummed, sang. With the final whistle, many walked out to celebrate and express their support for Morocco, she claimed.

ElSayed said dozens of supporters informed him how significant the game was.

In Qatar, which is hosting the first World Cup in the Middle East, Morocco fans stated their wildest expectations and ambitions had been surpassed by the Atlas Lions’ mesmerizing trip to the last four, where they will face France on December 14.

“This was a terrific match, [coach] Walid Regragui’s side was very tactical, and the whole team showed their quality,” fan Abdul Aziz told Al Jazeera from Doha’s Souq Waqif, where fans without tickets watched the game on TV.

“They played two separate halves, the first they wanted to win by at least one goal, and the second was highly tactical,” he continued. “They won,”

Morocco has played more than seven hours without conceding a goal in Qatar thanks to their clean sheet.

Bahraini Hussein was proud of the result.

“I’m extremely delighted — this is the first World Cup in an Arabic country, and now we have an Arabic team in the semifinals,” he told Al Jazeera at Souq Waqif. “I’m proud. Amazing.”

Youssef En Nesyri’s 42nd-minute header sealed Morocco’s triumph in Baghdad.

Baghdad’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed remarked, “People are celebrating and will continue overnight.”

“They say this triumph is very symbolic because it’s for Morocco, the African continent, the Arab world, and the Middle East,” he added.

“Everyone’s excited… They say Iraq has won the contest.”
