Rogue wave kills American woman and injures four

  • When a “rogue wave” struck their cruise ship during a storm, one guest was killed and four others were injured.
  • The Viking Polaris was carrying people on an Antarctic trip when the storm struck it.
  • Viking Cruises announced, “It is with great sadness that we report a visitor passed tragically as a result of the event.

The US National Ocean Service classifies a “rogue wave” as being “more than twice the magnitude of surrounding waves,” and Viking Cruises confirmed this in a statement released on Saturday.

Viking Cruises announced, “It is with great sadness that we report a visitor passed tragically as a result of the event.

The name and country of origin of the traveller were not disclosed.
The dead passenger was an American woman, according to the official news agency of Argentina, Telam, who “took strikes from a glass surface that collapsed in the middle of the storm.”

Four additional passengers received non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the event, and they were attended to by the ship’s onboard physician and medical team, according to Viking.

The cruise line says it is looking into it and has postponed the next voyage of the Viking Polaris, which was planned to depart from December 5 to 17.

According to Viking Cruises, the incident only caused “minimal damage” to the boat, which arrived in Argentina on Wednesday.

Rogue waves, according to the US National Ocean Service, are “extremely unpredictable” and frequently arrive suddenly from directions other than those of the prevailing wind and waves.
