Ford has announced a new recall for compact SUVs. This time, about 520,000 Ford Escape and Bronco Sport models in the United States are affected. Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that cracks in the fuel lines of the cars could cause fires to start under the hood of some cars.
The company said that 634,000 SUVs are being called back all over the world because of the problem.
In particular, the fuel injectors in some 2022-2023 Escapes and 2021-2023 Bronco Sports with a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbocharged engine can crack. This could let fuel or fuel vapour leak over hot parts of the car and start a fire.
Ford isn’t telling people to stop driving their cars. The company said it thinks the problem will only happen in a very small number of cars. The company said it knows of 20 fires that seem to be related to this new problem.
Some of these SUVs were recalled before because they could catch fire, which was the same reason. That recall, which was announced in March, was because of a possible leak that could let oil get into parts of the car where it could start a fire.
The company says that most of the cars that were recalled earlier have had the work done to fix the problem. That doesn’t mean, though, that they are safe from the problem in this latest recall.
Under the new recall, Ford dealers will install a software update that will find a possible cracked injector. If a crack is found in an injector, a warning light will appear on the dashboard and the engine power will be cut. Ford said that this will help the driver find a safe place to pull over, stop, and call for help.
Ford dealers will also put in a tube that will drain any fuel that leaks out of the car onto the ground, away from the hot parts of the car. The work that needs to be done won’t cost the SUV owners anything.
Ford said that it is making plans for dealers to pick up and drop off the cars for free so that they can be fixed. Car owners can also bring their own cars to dealerships.
The Ford Escape and the Ford Bronco Sport have a lot of the same parts. It has nothing to do with the bigger Ford Bronco, which is an SUV that looks more like a truck and competes with the Jeep Wrangler.
