KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rahman slammed the Sindh government for once again attempting to delay the Local Government (LG) elections in Karachi and Hyderabad for three months.
The Sindh cabinet on Friday approved a proposal seeking adjournment of local bodies polls in Karachi by three more months. The provincial cabinet approved an amendment in the Sindh Local Government Act 2013 through a circulation summary to delay polls for an indefinite period.
The provincial government also wrote a letter once again to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for postponing the by-polls for three months. The electoral body will hear the case on November 15.
While holding an emergency press conference, Hafiz Naeem expressed his displeasure and said the Sindh government is continuously taking measures against Karachi. He said the ECP announces to conduct holds but the provincial government is conspiring against it.
He said the ECP had called a meeting of stakeholders on Nov 9 at the request of the Jamaat-e-Islami which could be held due to a public holiday and has been shifted to Nov 14. He said the Supreme Court has clearly said that elections should be held in Karachi.
“PPP claims to call itself a democratic party but is taking anti-Karachi measures. PPP and MQM have a nexus due to which Karachi has no caretaker,” said. “An illegitimate administrator has been appointed in Karachi, yet MQM says that the administrator belongs to them”
He said the ECP should finally announce the municipal elections and bound the Sindh government to conduct the polls.
“Who has authorized the Sindh government to decide for the people of Karachi?’ he said. “Sindh Assembly has a majority of politicians exploiting the citizens of Karachi. This practice of providing artificial representation should end now.”
He demanded that Rangers should provide the personnel to conduct the polls. He said the ECP should exercise its authority and declare the elections finally. He said Jamaat-e-Islami’s movement for the rights of Karachi is ongoing and will continue its struggle in a peaceful manner.
