  • Michael Vaughan said India had done “nothing” since 2011’s ODI World Cup
  • India scored a meagre 169 runs in their opening innings
  • Vaughan criticized India for their poor performance

Former England captain Michael Vaughan claimed that India had done “nothing” since winning the ODI World Cup in their own backyard in 2011 following their humiliating departure from the T20 World Cup 2022.

After a destructive batting display by Jos Buttler and Alex Hales at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, England destroyed the men in blue.

India scored a meagre 169 runs in their opening innings, helped by half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya. Hales and Buttler, however, shown aggressive determination, scoring 80 and 86 runs, respectively, to complete the chase for England in 16 overs, leaving the Indian bowlers unable to defend the set target.

Vaughan criticized India for their poor performance after they were eliminated from the World Cup, saying they had been underwhelming at international competitions ever since they had won the 50-over World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka in the championship match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

“India are the most under-performing white-ball team in history. Every player in the world who goes to the Indian Premier League says how it improves their game but what have India ever delivered?

“Since winning the 50 over World Cup on home soil in 2011 what have they done? Nothing. India are playing a white-ball game that is dated and have done for years,” the former cricketer wrote in his column.

After defeating India, England will face Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022 championship match on November 13 in Melbourne.

Imran Khan, who guided Pakistan to its first World Cup in 1992, took office as Pakistan’s prime minister in 2018.

Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, could become prime minister if his team wins on Sunday, according to Vaughan.

“It is magnificent to think that 30 years on from the 1992 final against Pakistan we have a rematch. Okay, it is a different format but the occasion will feel the same. It will mean so much to Pakistan. If Babar Azam lifts the trophy, who knows he might be prime minister of Pakistan one day. You put yourself on a pedestal forever in Pakistan cricket. It is a huge moment.” he added.

The ex-cricketer-turned-pundit also discussed his worries for the English squad, who would compete without batsman Dawid Malan and bowler Mark Wood in the championship game.

“If you look at England, I worry about them without Mark Wood and Dawid Malan. With Jofra Archer and Jonny Bairstow out as well, England have lost a core of their first-choice team,” he stated.

On Sunday, November 13, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the T20 World Cup 2022’s championship match would pit Pakistan against England.

However, rain is likely to hamper the big game because Melbourne is expected to experience 100% chance of showers on Sunday, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
