For the first time since 2019, the New York City Marathon was run on Sunday with 50,000 participants.

Additionally, the competition served as the final stop in the Abbott World Marathon Majors Series XIV.

The winner of the men’s race was Kenya’s Evans Chebet, the 2022 Boston Marathon champion, who finished in two hours, eight minutes, and 41 seconds. Daniel Do Nascimento, a Brazilian runner, passed out halfway through the race.

Chebet remarked, “My team gave me motivation and I knew that after winning Boston I could come to New York and also do well,”

In 2:23:23, Kenyan runner Sharon Lokedi completed her first-ever marathon, taking first place in the women’s competition.

Lokedi stated, according to Xinhua:

“I expected to run well, but it ended up being an even better outcome than I had hoped for,”

Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s professional wheelchair classes were won by Swiss athletes Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni, who both set new course records.

According to New York Road Runners, the course-record incentive for the professional wheelchair division this year was increased to 50,000 USD, making the wheelchair division payout equivalent to the open division bonus (NYRR).

After being postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic, the New York City Marathon was limited to about 30,000 runners in 2021.
