- Cricketer from Sri Lanka was detained and charged on Sunday over the alleged sexual assault of a lady in Sydney, according to police
- This happened just hours after the national team’s Twenty20 World Cup loss to England
He was widely recognised in the local media as batsman Danushka Gunathilaka, who had a hamstring injury in the first round of the World Cup and was forced to withdraw.
The 31-year-old was replaced in the lineup but stayed in Australia with the club.
Without identifying the individual, New South Wales police stated in a statement that “Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week.”
The two had been corresponding on a dating app for a few days when they allegedly met.
The statement continued, “It is then alleged that on the evening of November 2, 2022, he sexually attacked her.”
Early on Sunday morning, the man was detained at a Sydney hotel and charged with four charges of having sex against his will.
Bail was denied to him.
Gunathilaka, a left-handed opener, made his international debut in 2015 and has since played 46 ODIs, 46 T20s, and eight Tests.
