KARACHI: At least 81 people lost their lives and 347 others got injured during robbery incidents last month in different areas of Karachi, Bol News reported quoting a report.

However, the crime rate in Karachi has reportedly been reduced by 4.25 per cent this year comparing to the last year.

In October, citizens were deprived of 830 cell phones and three vehicles by perpetrators. Incidents of stealing of 67 vehicles and 1,389 motorcycles were reported last month.

Police encountered 262 attacks till October 16, while in September they faced 675 assaults. At least 92 robbers were killed in various police encounters and 792 others were injured, whereas 6,950 dacoits were arrested.

Police recovered 5,023 weapons from suspects in October, which included 16 SMGs, 4,729 pistols, 44 rifles and 234 short guns.

In October, Karachi Police also recovered 1000 kilogram charas, ice, heroin and crystal and arrested 6,676 drug peddlers. During crackdown on gutka, 2,743 gutka sellers were arrested and 20,390 kg gutka was recovered from them.

On October 8, a nine-month-old infant girl was killed and her mother was seriously wounded in an exchange of fire between robbers and the police in Nazimabad area of Karachi.

According to reports, the incident had occurred in North Nazimabad Block-M where police and the criminals exchanged fire during which a bullet hit the minor girl travelling in the rickshaw with her mother.

Police officials had said that they received a report of two robbers looting a family on the Madadgar 15 helpline and a motorcycle squad was sent to apprehend the criminals.

Police had said a minor was injured and her mother was injured in the crossfire after shots were fired by the robbers. They had said police only resorted to aerial firing in their pursuit of the criminals while the victim was killed by the criminals.  The robbers had fled the scene after the inside.

The minor child was identified as nine-month-old Anabiya and her mother as Hina. Both were travelling in a rickshaw. Both were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed hospital where the mother is receiving medical treatment while the body of the minor girl was handed over to their family.
