In her most recent role, Carey Mulligan played a part in one of the most shocking scandals in recent history.
As she arrived at the Los Angeles premiere of She Said at the 2022 AFI Fest on Friday, the 37-year-old Oscar nominee told PEOPLE that she “took it very seriously” when she played one of the New York Times reporters who reported on the sexual abuse claims against Harvey Weinstein.
“I think we felt that weight of responsibility, and I’ve felt it in other jobs,” she said. “I think that’s especially true when you play a real person, but the stories we were telling are so real and recent, not just to the people who worked on the movie but also to the people who watch it, to an audience.
“You’re conscious that this tale will influence individuals who go and watch it in the cinema,” Mulligan said.
She called celebrating the premiere with Megan Twohey, whom she portrays, and Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan), Twohey’s colleague reporter, and Weinstein’s survivors the “greatest delight” of the project.
Mulligan also described how Twohey, who won a Pulitzer Prize with Kantor for their work, “offered unlimited access to her life” as the actor had the rare chance to meet and interact with her character.
“I’ve never portrayed someone alive. I’ve been reading autobiographies, so playing actual people was interesting, and she’s the coolest. I want her friendship. I want her approval “said
“Our kids hung out,” Mulligan said. “Playdates. She was gracious in bringing her kid to my son’s birthday celebration. Amazing.”
