Following Afghanistan’s defeat to Australia in the T20 World Cup, all-rounder Mohammad Nabi announced his resignation as captain on Friday. He gave as reasons his dissatisfaction with the team’s preparation for the major tournament and his differences with the administration and selectors.

In their final Super 12 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, Afghanistan fell to Australia by four runs while chasing a total of 169. Afghanistan was the only team to depart the World Cup without a victory after the tight loss left them with three losses and two no-results.

“Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that not us nor our supporters were expecting. We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches,” Nabi made a message that was published on his Twitter page.

“From the last one year, our team’s preparation was not to a level that a captain would want it or needed for a big tournament. Moreover, in some of the last tours the team management, selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance.

“Therefore, with due respect, effectively immediately I announce to STEP DOWN as a CAPTAIN & will continue to play for my country when the management & team need me.

After Rashid Khan’s own retirement, the 37-year-old Nabi took over as captain prior to the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. Nabi had already been appointed captain in 2010, taking Nawroz Mangal’s place.
