  • Over 1,000 solutions were submitted for the second Earthshot cycle, a 30% increase over the previous year.
  • The winners will be announced this December at an awards ceremony in Boston.

The list of 15 innovators in the running for this year’s five Earthshot categories was released on Friday by the Prince of Wales’ prestigious environmental award.

Over 1,000 solutions were submitted for the second Earthshot cycle, a 30% increase over the previous year. The winners will be announced this December at a glittering awards ceremony in Boston, which Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are expected to attend.

The five winners will each receive a $1 million grant to help them scale and accelerate their projects’ goals, as well as assistance from the Earthshot network.

Following a thorough screening and advisory panel review, the 15 changemakers advanced to the contest’s penultimate round. The Earthshot Prize Council, which includes members such as Prince William, Queen Rania of Jordan, Cate Blanchett, Sir David Attenborough, Indra Nooyi, Jack Ma, and others, will ultimately choose the winners.

In a statement, Prince William said, “The innovators, leaders, and visionaries that make up our 2022 Earthshot Finalists prove there are many reasons to be optimistic about the future of our planet. They are directing their time, energy, and talent towards bold solutions with the power to not only solve our planet’s greatest environmental challenges, but to create healthier, more prosperous, and more sustainable communities for generations to come.”

“I am so excited to celebrate these fifteen Finalists and see the five Winners of The Earthshot Prize announced in Boston – the hometown of President John F. Kennedy, who shared The Earthshot Prize’s belief that seemingly impossible goals are within reach if we only harness the limitless power of innovation, human ingenuity, and urgent optimism,” he added.
