The five finalists for Prince William of Britain’s Earthshot Prize, which offers 1 million pounds ($1.12 million) to each winner who develops a solution to a significant environmental issue, were announced on Friday.

The 15 finalists in five categories include everything from an Amsterdam recycling programme to a Kenyan firm producing cleaner-burning stoves. There were almost a thousand nominations for the award.

“They are directing their time, energy, and talent towards bold solutions with the power to not only solve our planet’s greatest environmental challenges, but to create healthier, more prosperous, and more sustainable communities for generations to come,” William said of the finalists.

The reward was established in 2020 by William, who succeeded Queen Elizabeth as heir to the British throne in September. It was named after John F. Kennedy’s ambitious “moonshot” project and his objective for the 1969 moon landings.

The other prize candidates are a Chinese team attempting to turn arid desert into productive soil, an Indian company producing a sustainable substitute for leather from wasted flowers, and an Omani initiative removing carbon dioxide by turning it into rock.

On December 2, the awards ceremony will be held in Boston.
