Legendary Australian umpire Simon Taufel has spoken out about the controversial final over of the T20 World Cup match between archrivals Pakistan and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
In the final over, Pakistani pacer Mohammad Nawaz deflected the ball after hitting the wickets, bowling Indian hard-hitter Virat Kohli.
Kohli and wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik, who was on strike, ran across the pitch to score three runs on the same ball.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam and his team were upset by the umpires’ bye signals and checked for a dead ball. After the Men in Blue won the mega game, social media debated the idea, even though the umpires disapproved.
Taufel agreed with the umpires’ bye call.
“After the exciting climax to the India v Pakistan match at the MCG last night, I’ve been asked by many to explain the Byes that India scored after Kohli was bowled off the free hit,” Taufel wrote on LinkedIn.
“After the batters ran three, the umpire called Byes. The striker cannot be out bowled for a free hit, so the ball is still in play and all Byes Law conditions are met “said.
