Coach Silverwood says Sri Lanka is believing despite defeat

  • They reached the Super 12 despite a surprise loss to Namibia.

Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood feels his team can move from a tough Twenty20 World Cup group despite losing to holders Australia.

Marcus Stoinis’ 18-ball 59 cost the Asian champions a Super 12 encounter in Perth on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka follows New Zealand and England in Group 1. Semifinals: top two. Sri Lanka play New Zealand in Sydney on Saturday.

“I honestly believe we can challenge in this group and come out victors,” Englishman Silverwood said.

“We’ve shown our strengths and teamwork.

If we play well, we can run anyone close.”

Last month, Dasun Shanaka guided Sri Lanka to the Asia Cup T20 victory in UAE, defeating India and Pakistan. They reached the Super 12 despite a surprise loss to Namibia in Australia’s opening round.

Stoinis helped them defeat Ireland and force Australia to work hard in Perth.

“The group’s confidence is building,” said 47-year-old Silverwood, appointed in April after England’s Ashes humiliation in Australia.

“Obviously today is regrouping and coming back strong.”

Injuries have hurt Sri Lanka’s shock aspirations. Binura Fernando was added after bowling five balls in Perth.

“Obviously we’re having some bad luck with injuries, especially in the pace stock,” said Silverwood.

After assessing Fernando’s injuries, we’ll decide.
