Cricket West Indies confirmed on Monday that West Indies head coach Phil Simmons has resigned following the team’s elimination from the T20 World Cup in Australia.
West Indies, who have won the tournament twice, was unexpectedly eliminated by Ireland on Friday after being destroyed by nine wickets in Hobart. They finished last in Group B with two points.
Simmons stated, “I acknowledge that the great nations we represent as well as the squad are suffering.
“It’s heartbreaking and upsetting, but we simply didn’t show up. Since we fell short, we must now watch a tournament without taking part in it. It’s incomprehensible, and I sincerely apologize to our fans and supporters for that.
West Indies was the first team to leave the world championship since the inaugural competition in South Africa in 2007.
In 2016, West Indies won the T20 World Cup after defeating England at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens under Simmons’ leadership.
The two-test series against Australia from November 30 to December 12 will be his final games in command.
