The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered the government of Punjab to legislate on the local government (LG) polls in the province.
A case was heard in the ECP regarding the postponement of LG elections in Punjab.
During the hearing, the Chief Election Commissioner summoned the Secretary Election Commission, who said that the term of the local government of Punjab was completed on December 31, 2021, and on April 14, 2022, the Election Commission had issued the schedule for local elections in Punjab, but Lahore High Court gave stay on the matter.
He said that the constituencies were formed twice in the province and the expenses were incurred but the polls were not announced adding that contempt action must be taken against the local government.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that the Punjab government has not had a local government for 10 months and no government wants to hold local elections.
The CEC said that the commission will now hold no more meetings with the government adding that a reference is being sent to the Supreme Court regarding this requesting a contempt of court action.
“Punjab government is not taking the local elections seriously, violating the constitution and the orders of the Supreme Court,” he added.
On this occasion, the Chief Election Commissioner has directed that the Punjab government should enact a local government law within 7 days, otherwise, local elections will be held in Punjab on the basis of the previous law.
