A blind skateboarder from Michigan broke a Guinness World Record by performing a 22-foot-and-five-inch 50-50 grind on a rail.

Daniel Mancina, 35, of Royal Oak, reported that he began skateboarding at age 13, the same year he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa. The disorder damages the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the rear of the eye and frequently results in total blindness.

The progression of Mancina’s condition was first modest, but he eventually judged that he had lost too much vision to continue skateboarding.

Years later, despite having an almost minimal vision in one eye, Mancina decided to give skating another shot.

Mancina told Guinness officials, “I rely on my white cane the most, using it to scan my environment and to find obstacles while skating,” added, “Being a blind skater, I have to take my time to feel obstacles and have a good understanding of them before I start skating.”

Mancina, who is now totally blind, stated that he continually updates his technique.

As Mancina said, “My favourite trick changes all the time,” added, “I get obsessed with a trick for a while and then kind of move on to new ones. I really love skating flat bars the most though.”
