In memory of the late British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, a “moving” Thanksgiving service was performed on Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral and the British Embassy.

The United States vice president Kamala Harris, the second gentleman Doug Emhoff, and the speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi joined the other Democrats at the memorial service to honour the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, who passed away at the age of 96.

Dame Karen Pierce, the British ambassador, spoke at the service. She introduced Her Majesty as “a great friend and admirer” of the nation who made six official visits, addressed Congress, met presidents, attended baseball and American football games, and participated in commemorative events. She was dressed in all black.

She also thanked the U.S. for paying tribute to the Queen and mentioned that the flag at the site of the Battle of New Orleans had been lowered to half-mast.

The US’ “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the UK’s “God Save the King” were also played during the service.

A former assistant to Margaret Thatcher named Nile Gardiner tweeted about the memorial ceremony:  “A beautiful and deeply moving thanksgiving service today in Washington’s National Cathedral in honour of the life of Her Majesty the Queen.
