Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, social media users allege Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, imitated the late Princess Diana’s style.

However, the image that was circulated on social media was shot in 2019 at a Remembrance Day event, and her attire was appropriate for the anniversary of the 1918 Armistice.
“People are saying Meghan is a baddie for this,” according to a tweet from September 12, 2022.
A photo montage of Markle and Diana with black jackets and hats is featured in the article. Within days of the queen’s passing on September 8, 2022, similar posts on Twitter received tens of thousands of shares.
Another tweet with the hashtag #QueenElizabeth from September 12 reads, “I am here for this level of petty.”
The side-by-side pictures were also shared on Facebook and Instagram.
However, a backward image search reveals that Markle was photographed on November 11, 2019, during a Remembrance Day service, as shown in the AFP image below.
Diana was photographed on November 11th, 1991, and passed away in a vehicle accident in 1997.
Diana and Markle are both seen donning poppies, according to Jessica Storoschuk, a historian and blogger who specialises on the British royal family, who told AFP that this is done “to honour veterans and those who did not return” from World War I.
“This would be immediately understood in the context of Remembrance Day in Britain, Canada, and elsewhere,” she said.
The Virginia Commonwealth University’s Brooke Newman, an expert on early modern Britain and the royal family, concurred.
“By dressing in a simple black belted overcoat adorned with a single red poppy, both women attempted to shift emphasis away from themselves and toward the central focus of the solemn occasion: commemorating the anniversary of the 1918 armistice,” she said.
On previous Remembrance Days, photographs of other royal women were taken wearing identical attire. Below is a picture of Princess Catherine in 2021 sporting black clothing and a red poppy.
Women in the royal family wore “what was expected” of them for Queen Elizabeth II’s burial on September 19, according to Storoschuk: a black dress or coat that reached the knee or longer, a black cap, and black tights.
To say goodbye to the monarch, Markle made multiple public appearances while wearing all black.
William and Harry, the sons of King Charles III, also made a public appearance on September 10 to greet the throng assembled in front of Windsor Castle. They were joined by their spouses.
Since quitting their royal duties and relocating to Los Angeles in early 2020, Harry and his wife have been the subject of significant media attention. Such interest was only increased by the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 and their lucrative contracts with streaming services like Spotify and AppleTV.
The internet posts, according to Newman, contribute to ongoing criticism of Markle’s wardrobe choices.
“Members of the royal family, and women in particular, face intense media scrutiny and therefore take great care with their clothing and jewelry choices,” she said. “As the only person of African descent to marry into the royal family, Meghan has faced an unprecedented level of negative criticism about her fashion choices — regardless of how carefully she selects her outfits.”..
