Albanese’s center-left administration seeks to modify the constitution to give Indigenous people a vote in parliament. After May’s election, he promised it. Mr Albanese said the former NBA player, who is in Australia on a speaking tour, might help strengthen Indigenous voices in parliament.
Australia’s government rejected a 2017 plan to represent Indigenous peoples in parliament. Mr. Albanese’s leadership wants greater representation and is mobilising popular support via sports personalities.
If passed, “Indigenous Voice to Parliament” will form a permanent Indigenous advisory body to parliament. Mr Albanese added, “We know Mr O’Neal works in the U.S. on social justice and bringing up marginalised people, especially via sports.”
His administration wants “the widest possible support” and to interact with those who can connect with youth and all of society.
Mr Albanese praised Shaq for bringing people from diverse backgrounds together and “recognising that Australian history didn’t begin in 1788.”
Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney called O’Neal’s involvement a “noble job” “I’m here in your nation. Let me know what you need.” “Thanks, God bless, and Shaq loves Australia, okay? See you shortly.”
After the national vote, the administration will reveal how it plans to increase Indigenous representation in parliament.
