Donald Trump’s former lawyer says he’s under investigation in Georgia for allegedly trying to alter the 2020 election results. Ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani criticized the inquiry as politically motivated.

Mr. Giuliani disputed the election’s results in court. He exacerbated Trump’s false voting fraud accusations.

Mr. Giuliani made baseless claims about stolen votes as the former president’s election lawyer in December 2020. He asked Georgia legislators not to recognize President Joe Biden’s election win.

Robert Costello, Rudy Giuliani’s attorney, told US media on Monday that the former mayor is being investigated.

Mr Giuliani would refuse to answer questions about Mr. Trump that infringe attorney-client privilege on Wednesday, Mr Costello added. Mr. Giuliani called Atlanta “one of the crookedest cities in the nation” and a “Democratic dictatorship” on a New York radio interview on Monday.

Fulton County, where the probe is situated, opened its criminal inquiry after a video emerged of Mr. Trump asking Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to change the result.

In May, a prosecutor called a grand jury. Fulton County DA Fani Willis said racketeering or conspiracy charges are possible. Just because Mr. Giuliani has been called to testify does not indicate he or anybody else will be prosecuted. Ms. Willis said she’s contemplating summoning Mr. Trump before the grand jury. A federal court denied Lindsey Graham’s request to bypass the Fulton County grand jury on Monday. The investigation is also investigating into a “fake electors” strategy in which Georgia Republicans signed fraudulent certificates saying Trump won the 2020 election.
