Martina Hingis, a former professional tennis player, was forced to retire at age 27 due to cocaine allegations.
The Swiss, 41, finished her great career with 25 Grand Slam victories, but the good times came to an end in 2007. At the age of 27, Hingis convened a press conference to reveal that she was being looked into after testing positive for the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine. She said, “I tested positive, but I have never used drugs, and I feel completely innocent.” “I’m upset and furious. I have chosen to address this claim head-on by speaking to the media because I feel it to be so abhorrent and horrible.”
She was tested at Wimbledon, and the amount of benzoylecgonine in her sample was determined to be 42 nanograms per millilitre. The International Tennis Federation found it to be a little amount, and she did attempt to appeal on the grounds that it was contamination rather than any unlawful activity on her part.
She was unsuccessful in her appeal, though, and the next year Hingis was given a two-year suspension from competition. As a result, she gave up playing tennis professionally.
The former athlete made news as well after her spouse discovered her in bed with another man. She was allegedly a chronic adulterer, according to French equestrian Thibault Hutin, who discovered her having an extramarital affair only a year after being hitched.
