Tropical Storm Aere is moving toward the Amami Islands and Okinawa

  • Aere is 110 kilometers east of Naha City in Okinawa Prefecture and moving northwest at 30 kilometers per hour.
  • The storm may approach the southern main island of Kyushu on Monday or later.
  • Torrential rains forecast for Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures until Sunday.

Late on Saturday, tropical storm Aere is to pass; closest to the Kagoshima Prefecture’s Amami Islands; and the main island of Okinawa. Aere was 110 kilometres east of Naha City in Okinawa Prefecture as of 6 p.m. on Saturday; according to the Japan Meteorological Agency; and was moving northwest at a speed of 30 kph. The storm had a 994 hectopascal central pressure. With gusts of 126 kilometres per hour close to its core; it had a maximum wind speed of roughly 83 kilometres per hour. Within 440 kilometres to the east and 220 kilometres to the west of the centre; strong winds gusting over 54 kilometres per hour were blowing. On Monday or later, the storm might make its way; toward Kyushu’s southernmost main island.

Up to 70 millimetres of rain per hour could fall on the main island of Okinawa; according to official forecasts for the prefectures of Okinawa and Kagoshima. Through Sunday evening, up to 200 millimetres of rain are to fall; in the area in a 24-hour period.  Depending on how it develops, the typhoon can produce strong winds. Around the main island of Okinawa and the Amami Islands; there will be rough seas with waves reaching a height of six metres. High waves, landslides, powerful winds, floods of low-lying areas, swollen rivers, lightning strikes; and sudden gusts of wind are among the dangers that weather officials are cautioning people about.
