TEHRAN: Five people were slain and 19 were injured after a powerful earthquake struck southern Iran early Saturday morning, as per the Iranian news agency.
The US Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province.
The earthquake occurred about one minute after a magnitude 5.7 tremor.
An Iranian news source said that the governor of Hormozgan, Mahdi Dosti, said that the earthquakes killed five people and hurt nineteen others.

Dosti stated that most of the damage occurred in the nearby village of Sayeh Khost.
In November of 2012, twin earthquakes of magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 struck the province of Hormozgan, killing one person.
Iran is in an area with a lot of earthquakes because it is where several tectonic plates and fault lines meet.
In 1990, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the north of Iran killed 40,000 people. This was Iran’s deadliest earthquake.
