The basement of the residence of a notorious cannibal killer has been discovered to contain a massive collection of human bones.
The gruesome find was uncovered by police in Mexico inside the residence of Andres Filomeno Mendoza, 73, also known as the Cannibal of Atizapan.
When police apprehended him last year while looking into the disappearance of one of his victims, they were shocked to discover mutilated women’s bones on a table inside his home.
The killer allegedly acknowledged to have killed some 30 women since 1990; chillingly, he had recorded their names in a notebook and said he had even eaten some of them.
Since last year, local police have discovered 4,300 bones and fragments in the house, 300 of which have been discovered in the previous four months. Many of them were buried beneath the concrete in the basement.
According to local media, the bones could be those of 19 victims—17 women, 1 guy, and 1 child.
In March, Mendoza was given a life sentence in prison for the murder of Reyna N.
On May 14, 2021, she was last seen alive while out shopping and allegedly ran into the suspect, who lived close by.
She is thought to be the woman whose remains were discovered on the table by police.
“We uncovered a basement created by the suspect which contained a horrible scene with human remains,” said prosecutor Dilcya Garcia.
According to local media, Mendoza often met his victims in nightclubs before fooling them into accompanying him to his house where he would stab them in the heart, cut them up, and bury them in the basement.
To help preserve the bodies, the serial murderer sprinkled salt over them.
Investigators are still working to identify his victims by literally piecing together the remains of his victims.
