Karachi: Probe committee formed in Qasba Morr firing incident

KARACHI: Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi Javed Alam Odho has constituted a committee to investigate the firing incident which claimed two lives at Qasba Morr area of the megacity during funeral rites of an alleged robber who was tortured to death by a mob.

The probe committee is headed by Deputy IG Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Kareem Khan and comprises Senior Superintendent Police (West) Investigation Arif Aslam Rao and SSP (Central) Maroof Usman.

The committee will investigate Bilal Khan’s mob lynching, which took place on Sunday night, and the situation that unfolded following the incident.

The Karachi Police spokesperson said the investigation body would submit its report comprising facts of the incident in three days.

One of the victims who were shot dead during the funeral rites has been identified as Suleman, 17, who worked at a cloth shop in Saddar. Family members of Suleman said he did not go to work that day and participated in the protest.

“We were returning after ending the protest following talks with police, when the firing incident took place,” they said requesting the IG and DG Rangers to take strict action against the incident and protect the metropolis from returning to the old situation.

Talking to media, Javed Odho apprised that the firing incident took place after the funeral prayers. He said mob had lynched an alleged robber to death on Sunday night, while another suspect was saved by police in injured condition.

Police officials said three people received bullet injuries after the funeral prayers.

The Karachi police chief said the incident should not be attributed wrongly and whoever would be responsible for the incident would be punished.
