- The umbrellas are on sale at Costco warehouses and online across the U.S. and Canada.
Costco has recalled almost 400,000 outdoor umbrellas; because the lithium-ion batteries can overheat and catch fire. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, SunVilla Corp. of Chino, California; reported receiving six reports of batteries in the black solar panels on umbrellas overheating. The 10-foot umbrella’s solar panel is attached at the top; and it illuminates LED lights along its arms.
According to the CPSC, the solar panels caught fire in three instances; when they were being charged indoors using an AC adaptor. In two instances, the solar panel puck that was still attached to the umbrellas overheated; and set them on fire.

From December 2020 to May 2022; the umbrellas were offered for $130 to $160 in Costco warehouses and online; throughout the US and Canada. In Canada, about 33,000 were sold.
All known customers are being contacted by SunVilla and Costco; regarding the recall and refunds. Customers can get a complete refund by returning the umbrellas and solar puck; to any Costco Warehouse in the country. Customers who are unable to return the item to Costco can get reimbursement information; by contacting SunVilla.
The solar panel puck on the umbrellas should be taken out; and customers should stop using the umbrellas. It should not be charged using the AC adaptor; and should be stored out of the sun; and away from combustible materials.
