Covid-19 vaccine’s effectiveness reduces after six months: Dow University

KARACHI: Dow University of Health Sciences Professor Dr Saeed Khan on Friday said coronavirus cases in the country were multiplying because of a new sub-variant of the viral disease, Bol news reported.

Professor Saeed Khan, who is in-charge of Dow university’s Covid-19 laboratory, said the new sub-variant was omicron’s BA.5 type, which was exponentially spreading all over the world.

He said cases of the new sub-variant of coronavirus were surfacing in Karachi as well, therefore the citizens should pay attention to vaccination. He asked citizens to get a booster shot of the Covid-19 vaccine as well and follow the standard operating procedures of the government against the virus, as its effectiveness reduced after six months.

The Dow university lab in-charge said the only solution to protect from the pandemic was social distancing, Covid-19 vaccine and wearing masks.

Pakistan’s biggest city – Karachi – is facing a sudden surge in coronavirus cases as the positivity rate spiked up to 15.75 per cent, Bol News reported on Friday.

The spike is the biggest among all cities all over Pakistan in the fresh wave. According to the National Institute for Health Sciences, as many as 168 new corona cases were reported in the last 24 hours – with a positivity ratio of 15.75 per cent. However, no causality was reported after tests of 1,160 tests.

After Karachi, most cases were reported in Lahore, with the positivity ratio of 2.38 per cent after tests of 1974 tests.

The Sindh government has increased testing in light of the emergence of corona cases, it has directed people to over 60 years to get booster shots, and meanwhile it has asked more details from the District Health Officers for children’s enrolment for vaccination.
