According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, awarding Ukraine EU candidate status is the single biggest thing that could be done to strengthen Europe in these trying times.
After Ukraine was given the status of a candidate for membership, the Head of State made this statement in a video message to the attendees of the EU summit.
Salutations to all of our friends, all Ukrainian leaders who are friends!
Hello to everyone who believes in freedom!
Three months ago, on March 24, I implored you to support us in a speech I gave to the European Council.
And what a journey the past three months have been! Together, Ukraine, your states, and the entire European Union.
Politics is not the way to go. I think this is where the new history of Europe will always begin. Without division, Europe. Europe devoid of “grey” areas. A truly unified Europe that understands how to protect its future, its ideals, and itself.
In the 30 years that our country has been independent, one of the most significant decisions has been made by you today.
However, in my opinion, this choice affects more than just Ukraine. The Russian War is testing our ability to uphold freedom and unity, and this is the most significant move toward bolstering Europe that could be made at this moment, under these trying circumstances.
We submitted our application for membership in the European Union on the sixth day of Russia’s formal war against Ukraine. We responded to the European Commission’s questionnaire quite quickly and at a very high standard.
Here is the outcome that was wanted today. Today, I want to reiterate that Ukraine is capable of joining the European Union on an equal footing.
Then, three months ago, I addressed each member state of the European Union and stated where I believed our relationship to be in its development. And today, in the same sequence as then, I’d like to personally express to each and every one of you how our people feel.
