Pakistan dispatches relief goods to quake-hit Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will dispatch relief goods immediately for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan which has claimed over a thousand lives.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb made the announcement, saying Pakistan will help the neighbouring country on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Emergency supplies including food, camps, blankets and other essential items were being dispatched to Afghanistan, she said in a statement.

She said the prime minister announced humanitarian assistance in the wake of earthquake which caused loss of lives and property in the landlocked country.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) arranged the assistance in collaboration with other stakeholders which will be handed over to Afghan authorities in Khost.

A convoy of eight trucks was loaded with relief items which included 200 tents, 200 tarpaulin and 500 blankets, besides three trucks carrying life-saving drugs.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan and vowed to provide relief assistance to the affected people.

He said Pakistan would provide all possible assistance to the people of Afghanistan. “We are with our Afghan brothers and sisters in this difficult time,” he remarked.

PM Shehbaz Sharif said he had issued directives to the Pakistani authorities concerned to provide necessary relief assistance to the government of Afghanistan.

“We are deeply saddened by the damage caused by the earthquake, especially in the Paktika region,” he said.

The death toll from an earthquake in Afghanistan hit 1,000, with more than 600 injured while the toll is expected to grow.
