ISLAMABAD: Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman on Tuesday directed departments concerned to take all preemptive precautionary measures and pursue a coordinated strategy to cope with any possible disastrous impact of monsoon rains.
In her tweets on Tuesday, she pointed out that Pakistan would receive monsoon rains by August, and Punjab and Sindh were expected to receive above normal rains.
Alluding to the emergency situation caused by the onset of monsoon rains in India and Bangladesh, the federal minister warned there was a clear threat of urban flooding in big cities including Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Islamabad.

She said there was also increased possibility of flooding in rivers and streams. She said all departments concerned had been asked to ensured timely precautionary measures.
Sherry Rehman said the Ministry of Climate Change had also issued Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department, rain-windstorm with thundershower is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit Baltistan, Kashmir, Sindh and northeast Balochistan during next twelve hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall and a few hailstorms may also occur at scattered places during the forecast period.
Heavy falls may trigger land sliding in vulnerable areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galyat, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan during next 48 hours. Heavy falls may generate flash flooding in local Nullahs/Rivers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and Northeast Balochistan. Heavy downpour may cause urban flooding in Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Lahore.
Temperature of some major cities recorded this morning: Islamabad 21 degree centigrade, Lahore and Quetta 22, Karachi 30, Peshawar 23, Gilgit 15, Murree 11 and Muzaffarabad 17 degree centigrade.
According to the Met Office forecast for Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, cloudy weather with chances of rain-windstorm and thundershower is expected in Srinagar and Leh, cloudy with chances of Rain-windstorm/thundershower (isolated heavy fall and few hail storm) in Jammu and Baramula, cloudy weather with chances of rain-windstorm /thundershower (a few heavy fall) in Pulwama, Anantnag and Baramula.
