PTI MPA oblivious of why police arrested him

Shabbir Qureshi on Monday said he still could not figure out why the police had such an attitude with him.

KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of the Sindh Assembly Shabbir Qureshi on Monday said he still could not figure out why the police had such an attitude with him.

In a video message after his release on bail, Shabbir Qureshi said the police kept him blindfolded for 12 hours. He said PTI workers, supporters and leaders backed him at every step.

He said the real problem was that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was scared of the local body elections in Site Town area.

“The PPP wants to take over Karachi like the local government system of the whole province,” Shabir Qureshi said.

He said in Site Town, his party had built the best and strongest system of the local government. The PPP wanted to take over every town, the PTI MPA said.

On June 19, Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Javed Alam Odho had said Shabbir Qureshi had been arrested for alleged harassing of a woman.

The police officer had said a woman had complained to SITE-B police station on June 19 alleging that Qureshi had sexually assaulted her.

Police had transferred the Sindh Assembly member to an unknown location after his arrest, following which Leader of Opposition in Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh had demanded his immediate release.

Haleem Adil Sheikh had said the MPA was detained when he left his house for Fajr prayer after which he was shifted to an unidentified place.

AIG Odho had said that Qureshi had been arrested over a woman’s complaint. He had said that the woman had alleged that the PTI MPA lured her with a job offer.

Odho had further stated that a case had been registered against Qureshi on behalf of the complainant under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). He had said further investigation against Qureshi were underway.
