The US said it was aware of rumours that a third American citizen has gone missing after visiting Ukraine, but it hadn’t contacted Russia about two other Americans who may have been detained there while fighting Russian troops.

According to U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price, rumours concerning the two men are unsubstantiated. “As of today, we have not raised this yet with the Russian Federation… (We) haven’t seen anything from the Russians indicating that two such individuals are in their custody.”

Family members have reported that Andy Huynh, 27, of Hartselle, Alabama, and Alexander Drueke, 39, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who went to Ukraine as volunteer fighters against Russian forces, are believed to have been caught. Both men have been missing for a week.

The US military claimed that both men had previously served in the service, Huynh in the Marine Corps and Drueke in the Army Reserves, but gave no details regarding their whereabouts at the time of writing.

The U.S. military has consistently refused sending soldiers to Ukraine and advised veterans that there are other ways to support the country besides responding to requests for assistance from Kyiv to engage in combat.

, Russia invaded Ukraine under the pretence of conducting a “special military operation” aimed at disarming and “denazifying” its neighbour. According to Ukraine and its supporters, Moscow started an unprovoked war of aggression that resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.

The two’s families and American officials have denied reports that they were taken prisoner of war by Russia. The White House had earlier stated that it was “working very hard to discover more” about the two.
