DG ISPR shouldn’t interpret political matters: Asad Umar

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has once again demanded a judicial commission to probe the foreign conspiracy allegedly behind the ouster of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Addressing a press conference alongside former human rights minister Shireen Mazari, PTI Secretary-General Asad Umar slammed remarks by Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Major General Babar that there was no foreign conspiracy against the previous government.

“DG ISPR has himself said army has nothing to do with politics,” said Asad Umar, adding the military’s spokesperson should not comment on political matters. “It is better to let politicians interpret political matters.”

He said that the Supreme Court should form a judicial commission and hold an open hearing on the matter. He said President Alvi has written a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) while Imran Khan, in his capacity as PTI chairman, will write another letter.

The PTI leader said that the facts written in the “threatening cable” suggested an open threat was being given to Pakistan that it will be isolated if Imran Khan is not removed from power.

He claimed that “foreign interference” has been clearly stated in the press releases of the NSC meetings. He said the army alone is not responsible for defending national security but the elected government as well.

“DG ISPR is right in saying that some military leadership representatives actually said that they cannot see any evidence of a conspiracy. Most of the civilian leadership said there was a conspiracy,” Umar said.

Shireen Mazari said the party is preparing a list of incidents before the no-confidence motion the meetings between US embassy officials with PTI dissidents and Noor Alam.

“A cipher is a communication between two governments,” she added. “After since Imran said absolutely not, there has been a conspiracy against him. It all began if he refused to provide airbases to them.”

She also questioned why then foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was kept unaware about the cipher and only when he demanded. He said there are many unanswed questions which must be answered.

Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Major General Babar Iftikhar had said the National Security Committee it’s meeting made it clear that no evidence of conspiracy was found for alleged regime change in the country.

Speaking about the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting, the DG ISPR said that the military leadership was present in the meeting and the participants were clearly briefed by agencies that there was no evidence of any conspiracy.
