Authorities say two Los Angeles-area police officers who were brought to the hospital after a shooting on Tuesday have died.

Following the incident, both cops were believed to be in critical condition and were taken to LAC-USC Medical Center, where they succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead, as per El Monte police.

Although neither officer was identified, LASD Captain Andrew Meyer said one was a 22-year veteran of the police and the other was a novice who had worked as an El Monte officer for less than a year.

In a joint statement, the City of El Monte, El Monte Police Department, and El Monte Police Officers Association said, “There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers.”

“It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families.”

The statement continued, “We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring of support we have received in the last few hours.”
