ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved Rs3.99 per unit increase in power tariffs.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) has requested the power regulator to increase prices by Rs4.05 per unit.
According to a notification issued by the NEPRA, the increase was made under fuel adjustment charges (FAC) for the month of April.
On May 31, NEPRA held a public hearing on the FCA. During the month of March, consumers were charged Rs2.86 per unit. The fuel adjustment charges for April are higher than the previous month by Rs1.13 per unit.
The new power tariff will only be applicable for bills in June. The rates will be charged from customers of all DISCOS except lifeline consumers However, the rate will not be applicable for K-Electric users.

It is pertinent to mention that NEPRA has already fixed the power tariff at Rs24.82 per unit for the fiscal year 2022-23 after a massive hike of Rs7.91 per unit.
After the hike, the prices of electricity increased from Rs16.91 to Rs24.82 per unit. The depreciation of the rupee and rising oil prices in the international market have been cited as reasons for the tariff hike.
The government determines the new tariff based on distribution and transmission losses, as well as revenue generated by various distribution companies.
Meanwhile, K-Electric has also submitted a request to NEPRA seeking a hike of Rs4.86 per unit in the power tariff under fuel adjustment charges.
The power utility has requested an increase of Rs4.52 for January to March 2022, and Rs0.36 for April. The increase will be reflected in the bills for June.
On May 27, NEPRA notified an increase in power tariff for K-Electric by Rs4.83 per unit under fuel adjustment charges for the month of March against demand in the hike of Rs5.27 per unit.
