Andriy Melnyk, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, has stated that he expects German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to keep his pledges to provide weaponry to Ukraine and to give Kyiv the chance to join the EU during his future visit to Kyiv. According to a source, he stated this to the German news site Spiegel.
“We expect that the chancellor will finally keep German commitments on weaponry supply and Ukraine’s EU membership during his visit to Kyiv,” Melnyk said.
Ukraine is still waiting for heavy weapons from Germany, including Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers and Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, according to the envoy. He claimed that promises and announcements alone would not be enough to help Ukraine repel the Russian onslaught in this conflict. Because the commitments were made several months ago, Melnyk said he hoped the chancellor would say when the promised weapons would arrive in Ukraine. Melnyk also expects for success in the negotiations for Ukraine’s EU membership.
“If the German Chancellor, along with the prime ministers from Paris and Rome, sends a signal that Ukraine can become a candidate country, it will be more than just a powerful symbol,” Melnyk said, adding that it would boost Ukrainians’ fighting spirit and clearly show Russia that the EU unanimously supports a free Ukraine.
Scholz has always stated that he intended to visit Kyiv not only for a picture shoot, but for tangible outcomes, he added.
