LHC stops police from harassing in-laws of Dua Zehra Kazmi

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday restrained police from causing any harassment to the in-laws of Syeda Dua Zehra Kazmi, the Karachi girl who solemnised nikah with Zaheer Ahmed of her free will.

Earlier, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigations Imran Kishwar produced the girl and her husband Zaheer Ahmed before the court.

Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh disposed of the petition in light of the recovery and production of the couple before the court.

The judge also directed the police not to cause any harassment to the petitioners.

Ms Kazmi’s mother in-law Noor Munir and brother in-law Shabbir Ahmed had filed the petition.

The petitioners through a counsel pleaded that they had no knowledge about the whereabouts of the couple but the police had been harassing them.

On June 8, the police had produced the couple before the Sindh High Court that observed that the girl was free to decide where she wanted to go.

The family of Kazmi had initially alleged that she had been abducted from Karachi, however, the girl later appeared in Lahore and approached the court for protection.

In a previous litigation, Dua Zehra had alleged before the court that her father had been forcing her to marry her cousin against her will. She had said her parents used to beat her on refusal to marry the boy of their choice.

On June 8, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had allowed teenager Dua Zehra to decide with whom she wanted to stay.

As per details, the SHC had resumed the hearing for the most hyped case of an allegedly missing teenager Dua Zehra and allowed the girl to decide with whom she wanted to stay, her parents or husband.

In a three-page written order, Justice Junaid Ghaffar had maintained that the court had announced the verdict in the light of testimonies that had proven the girl was not abducted.
