Russia starts Baltic Sea drills amid Ukraine tensions

  • NATO and Russian warships are taking part in massive joint exercises in the Baltic Sea.
  • Drills include over 45 ships, more than 75 aircraft, and 7,500 soldiers.
  • Land forces have been moved to Russia’s Kaliningrad region where they will engage the simulated enemy with real fire.

Russian warships are training in the Baltic Sea, as per the Russian Defense Ministry, while the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is conducting manoeuvres in the same area.

The enormous exercises feature roughly 60 surface warships, boats, and support vessels, 45 aircraft and helicopters, and 10,000 soldiers, according to the ministry.

The sailors will practise searching for simulated enemy ships and implementing anti-air, anti-ship, and anti-submarine protection procedures.

The land forces have been moved to selected sites in Russia’s Kaliningrad region, where they will engage the simulated enemy with real fire. Drills will be held through June 19th.

From June 5 to 17, 14 NATO allies, as well as two NATO partner nationsFinland and Swedenare taking part in the Baltic Operations exercises, which include over 45 ships, more than 75 aircraft, and 7,500 soldiers.
