Death penalty opponents are concerned that Arizona will now begin executing a continuous stream of convicts on death row. However, the state authorities did not reply quickly to a request for comment on their future execution plans.

In recent weeks, judges have rejected requests by Atwood’s attorneys to postpone the execution. He has maintained his innocence.

The execution crew attempted and failed to implant an IV into Dixon’s left arm before connecting it to his right arm. They then performed another incision in his groin for an IV line.

Dixon’s execution was the first in the state since the July 2014 execution of Joseph Wood. He received 15 doses of a two-drug combination over the course of roughly two hours.

Wood snorted and gasped many times before passing away.
