After their BA flight to Gibraltar met ‘technical issues,’ Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are returning to London.

As part of a contentious royal visit, the Queen’s youngest child was slated to arrive in the disputed British territory.

The flight was ‘safely’ rerouted, according to Gibraltar’s authorities, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex will arrive later today.

‘The Earl and Countess of Wessex’s arrival in Gibraltar has been significantly delayed,’ according to a spokeswoman, after their flight was safely rerouted back to the UK owing to a technical issue.

‘Alternative arrangement are being made for Their Royal Highnesses’ arrival in Gibraltar later today and the program will be adjusted accordingly.’

The BA490 jet made it to northern France before turning back to the United Kingdom, according to flight radar data.

Edward’s visit to Gibraltar meets with opposition from the Spanish government.

They say the land belongs to Spain, and future border arrangements are currently being discussed between the United Kingdom and the European Union.

The Spanish foreign ministry is said to have raised ‘concern’ about the trip, calling it ‘inappropriate’ in light of ongoing negotiations.
