Russian envoy to the United Nations rushes out of a meeting in Ukraine over a European statement

  • As European Council President Charles Michel addressed the 15-member assembly on Monday, Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia walked out, accusing Moscow of exacerbating a worldwide food catastrophe with its invasion of Ukraine.
  • Michel had also accused Russian forces of war crimes and crimes against humanity, citing claims of sexual violence as “a strategy of torture, fear, and repression” – the subject of the Security Council debate.
  • Nebenzia had “categorically disputed” any charges of sexual abuse by Russian soldiers during his own statement earlier in the meeting, calling them “lies.

Nebenzia had “categorically disputed” any charges of sexual abuse by Russian soldiers during his own statement earlier in the meeting, calling them “lies.”

“I couldn’t stay” because of “the lies that Charles Michel came here to propagate,” a visibly agitated Nebenzia told Reuters as he exited the Security Council chamber during Michel’s presentation.

“You may leave the room,” Michel murmured to Nebenzia as he went out. “Perhaps it’s easier not to listen to the truth.”

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 has exacerbated a global food crisis, with prices for grains, cooking oils, fuel, and fertiliser all skyrocketing. Russia and Ukraine produce roughly a third of the world’s wheat, and Russia also exports fertiliser, while Ukraine exports corn and sunflower oil.
