Boris Johnson wins a party confidence vote despite being damaged

  • Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, survived a confidence vote on Monday, but a huge revolt in his Conservative Party over the so-called “party gate” affair has harmed his authority and left him fighting for re-election.
  • Johnson, who won a landslide election victory in 2019, has been under fire since he and his team had alcohol-fueled parties in his Downing Street office and apartment while the UK was shut down due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • The vote was a setback for Johnson, with 41% of his parliamentarians voting against his leadership following months of scandals and gaffes that have cast doubt on his ability to govern Britain and lowered his public image.

The vote was a setback for Johnson, with 41% of his parliamentarians voting against his leadership following months of scandals and gaffes that have cast doubt on his ability to govern Britain and lowered his public image.

But Johnson, a master of political comebacks, instead described the vote as a “decisive result” meaning that “as a government, we can move on and focus on the stuff that I think really matters to people”.

“We can focus on what we’re doing to help people with the cost of living, what we’re doing to clear the COVID backlogs, what we’re doing to make streets and communities safer by putting more police out,” said Johnson, who for weeks has tried to move the national conversation away from “party gate”.

It’s a turn of events for Johnson, and it emphasis the extent of the public’s resentment of him. At recent events commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, he was greeted by a chorus of jeers and boos, as well as some faint cheers.
