Australia picks three pacers for Sri Lanka T20

  • Australia gets ready for the first T20I against Sri Lanka.
  • Ashton Agar is the only spinner in the Australian squad.
  • The Aussies picked three quicks for the match.

Australia has selected three fast bowlers for Tuesday’s opening Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka, looking to repeat their World Cup-winning strategy.

Conditions in Colombo are likely to favor fast bowlers, therefore Kane Richardson is recalled in place of Pat Cummins, joining Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the batting order.

Ashton Agar was the only specialist spinner selected by Aaron Finch, while Adam Zampa was at home for the birth of his first child.

Cummins and Zampa are the only two players missing from the eleven that won the global championship in Dubai in 2017.

Finch stated that he was tempted to select a second spinner, but chose not to due to the conditions in Colombo.

“The square is quite green, there’s been a lot of rain and the outfield is heavy,” Finch said on Monday.

“We expect a little spin, but it’s not a dry surface by any stretch, that’s the reason for picking one spinner.”

Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis will occupy the position of fifth bowler.

“It’s a similar structure to what we went with in the World Cup,” Finch added.

David Warner and Steve Smith have returned to the team after missing previous T20 matches for Australia.

Australia are currently on a seven-week tour in Sri Lanka, despite the island’s economic problems and recent turmoil.

During the tour, which concludes on July 12, the Australians will play three Twenty20 internationals, five one-day internationals, and two Tests.
