What to look forward to at Apple’s annual developer conference

  • Apple is anticipated to unveil its latest operating system, iOS 16.
  • The conference begins online on Monday and runs through Friday.
  • Rumors hint at a new TV OS that might integrate with smart homes, an upgrade to Apple Watch OS, and a MacBook Air.

Apple will hold its yearly developer conference, where it is anticipated to show off new software for its most popular gadgets and maybe reveal the most significant indication yet about a new product long thought to be in development.

Apple is anticipated to unveil its latest operating system, iOS 16, at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins online on Monday and runs through Friday. This could include a reworked notification center and lock screen for iPhones, as well as new health and social features for iMessage. Other speculations hint at new TV OS capabilities that might integrate with smart homes, an upgrade to Apple Watch OS that would improve battery life, and a new MacBook Air.

Some experts are also hoping that Apple (AAPL) may provide an early peek at a platform codenamed Reality IOS. The system might power Apple’s anticipated mixed reality headgear — a wearable gadget capable of both virtual and augmented reality — which has been in the works for years.
Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives has taken to naming the reported hardware product “Apple Eyewear,” an apparent allusion to Google’s early and failed attempt at smart glasses. Ives wrote in an investor note this week that he expects Apple to “strike on a number of AR/VR technologies that the firm plans to introduce.”

“Ultimately this strategy is laying the breadcrumbs to the highly anticipated AR headset Apple Glasses set to make its debut likely before the holiday season or latest early 2023,” he said.

The event will be a webcast live on Apple’s website, YouTube, and other social media sites. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. PT/1:00 p.m. ET. Here’s a more in-depth look at what to expect:

The iPhone lock screen gets a refresh

Like last year, iOS 16 features aren’t likely to be game changers, but a few tweaks could revitalize the user experience.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is likely to make communications more social and engaging, as well as redesign the notification system and lock screen with a stronger emphasis on widgets.
According to Ramon Llamas, research director at IDC Research, Apple might create a profitable opportunity for developers by reimagining lockscreen real estate to shift away from static notifications of texts and emails and toward interactive experiences like schedules, weather, and news.

Updates to iPad and Mac software

Apple is expected to unveil a new iPad operating system and Mac OS at an event on Wednesday. iPadOS could offer multitasking features similar to what’s coming to iPhones. The company could also unveil a refresh to Apple Watch OS with health, workout, and watch face options.

Hardware improvements

Apple could unveil a new MacBook Air with its in-house processor at an event later this month. Analyst: “Even if Apple does, I think the bigger news is not the hardware itself, but Apple’s own silicon”. The company may also discuss some developer opportunities around its next-generation M2 chip.
