On Saturday, fierce combat erupted in Severodonetsk and Lysychansk; the last two Russian-controlled cities more than 100 days after Moscow invaded its western neighbour.
Russian forces had suffered significant defeats, according to Governor Serhiy Haidai, and were blowing up bridges over the Siverskyi Donets River to prevent Ukraine from bringing in military reinforcements and delivering help to residents in Severodonetsk.
